The following is an abbreviated version of the long range plan adopted by the Newport Public Library Board of Trustees in the spring of 2000. The full long range plan is available for public viewing at the library.
STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK FOR THE NEWPORT PUBLIC LIBRARY
Beliefs: In this information age, production of information will increase rapidly and much of it will be made available electronically. The Newport Public library believes that the public library must be more than a symbol of a democratic society. It must serve as a conduit for an informed community. The Library believes that all citizens must have equal access to collections which are well organized for their use and interpretation, and which are provided without constraints. The Library believes that government has a responsibility to support public libraries and that citizens are inhibited from becoming lifelong learners without that support.
Guiding Principles: The Newport public library reflects the best of community values and those of the library professions, including:
Vision: Recognizing that a free public library is fundamental to a democratic society the Newport Public library aims to be a leading resource for information and the center for lifelong learning in our community. We see the Newport Public Library as a central meeting place that actively integrates life in the community with change in the world
Mission: The Newport Public Library provides a progressive program of library service to inform, enrich, enlighten, and entertain all members of the community that we serve. In fulfilling this mission, the library advocates the literacy of all members of our community, and recognizes reading as a privilege and joy for all
